Since the 1950s, Mondragón and the surrounding towns in the Basque region referred to as the Alto Deba have grown rapidly, due largely to the development of the cooperatives. Several effects are commonly associated with the high proportion of cooperative employment, including relatively low unemployment, higher income levels and a less unequal distribution of those incomes.
